•This lavishly decorated book, featuring around 200 photographs, delineates the rich and varied history of Baluchar textiles, especially the saris

•The very town that this wonderful sari bears the name of - Baluchar - is now gone, but the Baluchar sari is still alive, and is continuing to come off looms. How this art form traveled from Murshidabad to Bishnupur, then to Benares as well as to museums around the world has been analyzed and documented within the pages of this book

•The transition from Nawabi to Colonial rule in Bengal was beautifully captured in the superbly crafted works of Baluchar weavers from images of hookah-smoking nawabs and courtesans playing musical instruments, to English soldiers with canons, English women sitting boldly with their menfolk on elephants, hunting scenes, steamboats and trains

•Each of the essays in the book has been written by a specialist in the field of Indian textiles, focusing on the heritage, conservation and revival of Baluchars

The historic Baluchar textiles of Bengal are a testament to a unique weaving tradition. Composed of the finest silk, these textiles were painstakingly woven with intricate figurative and decorative patterns. They represent more than just a textile tradition. They are a window into the socio-cultural set-up of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The transition from Nawabi to Colonial rule in Bengal has been beautifully captured through these textiles. This richly illustrated book traces the historical development of Baluchar textiles, especially saris, and the position this art form has come to acquire in the twenty-first century. By dissecting the conditions, inspirations, materials, techniques and aesthetic qualities of this weaving tradition, this book showcases how this art form traveled from Murshidabad to Bishnupur, then to Benares as well as to museums around the world.

Schatten über Toruń

Polen, 1944

The Six Pillars of SelfEsteem Audible Audio Edition Dr Nathaniel Branden Macmillan Audio Books Reviews

  • I'm torn between 3 stars and 5 stars. I think I'll go with 3 stays, because the material is amazing but very difficult to get through. I wish it was more clear and concise, so that the reader would get through it quicker and began to practice it in their daily life.

The first half of the book is life changing. I bolted through it in a few hours. It gave me a realization that pulled me out of a 9 month on and off depression. Since reviewing some of the material whenever I feel down, along with other resources, it gave me insight and clarity in my life that has sustained joy in the past 3 months. I hope it continues. The most significant part that brought me to awareness was his quote about his dog, that I have shared with many others. He says his dog is focused on enjoying the outdoors, chasing squirrels and sniffing flowers, not worried at all about being "happier" than the other dogs. I don't know if it impacts others the way it did for me, because it was incredibly applicable to my own situation. I realized the significance and potential of this book to impact my life after reading that, and began taking notes seriously.

The second half of the book, in contrast to the first half... took quite a while to finish. It was dry, convoluted, and many of the same ideas are restated. It's his observations, theories and philosophy, and not really applicable to me. I finished it at last today. Just read the first half where it introduces the concept of self esteem, and MAYBE the last few pages on "The Seventh Pillar" and the appendices.
  • I bought this book from at the full price. It's a solid self-help book, and superb as long as the author sticks to the field of psychology. Parts I and II deal with establishing a solid definition of self-esteem and a cogent explanation of the Six Pillars. I found the sentence-completion exercises to be illuminating and helpful, and shouldn't be skipped if you plan to get the most out of the book. I may even purchase Branden's workbook for more sentence stem work.

Unfortunately, Part III of the book strays away from psychology and into the realm of philosophy. Here, Dr. Branden sounds more like his ex-lover Ayn Rand. Honestly, you can skip Part III of this book and still get more than your money's worth.

EDIT Do read the final chapter, 18 - Conclusion The Seventh Pillar of Self-Esteem. Appendix B is also worthwhile.
  • The pros Branden certainly has a lot of insights from his experience as a psychotherapist. He presents many relatable stories and experiences that readers can learn from.

    The cons

The book is vague, and aside from the examples (which a person may or may not identify with), the advice he gives is very abstract. Take responsibility for your life. Accept yourself. Be conscious. I'm having a very hard time wrapping my head around these concepts because there are obviously a lot more steps needed to fully understand them. Especially "be conscious." The author falls short at explaining the idea of consciousness and how it relates to self esteem.

The book is a difficult read. At first I questioned my own intelligence because I felt that I was reading certain sentences repeatedly without understanding what the author was getting at. Then I realized that Branden is a long-winded and sometimes contradictory writer, who doesn't fully respect the process of logical reasoning. This all became 100% clear to me when I realized he was a former lover of Ayn Rand. His writing is a worse version of Rand's writing. It's all the long-windedness and "what's-he-getting-at"s Rand is notorious for, but with less insights per page.
  • Please please please buy this. And highlight in it. And take notes. Then buy tons more copies and pass them out to everyone you care about.

If you have an analytical mind in addition to self-esteem struggles of any kind- you will be doing yourself a huge favor by introducing this book and all the content in it.
  • This book discusses crucial current issue mainly people specifically newer generations suffer, which is low self-esteem. The author did a great job explaining what actually self-esteem entails and that it is not in isolation from other important personal traits as self-assertiveness and responsibility for example. additionally, it contains plenty of exercises to do in order to enhance each of the mentioned six pillars. The only pitfall from my perspective is the language the book written with. It is kind of recondite, the author usually used long sentences and the vocabulary is not common at all. Maybe because I am not native English speaker, I feel his language is difficult. all in all, it is a nice book.
  • I'm a psychotherapist and I have gotten a lot out of this book personally and have recommended it to a lot of my clients. It isn't new by any means, but the information in it is timeless. I highly recommend this book to just about everyone. It can really help you make sense of your lives and help you feel good about yourself, in real ways, not in just shallow affirmations. Read this and you just might become both a "better" person and a much happier person.
  •  AMAZING book.
If you have self-esteem problems, you must read it.
If you DON'T have self-esteem problems, you STILL should read it!
Here is a short video review for you to understand why.

Burnout The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle Emily Nagoski PhD Amelia Nagoski DMA 9781984817068 Books Reviews

  • This book is special and important. It's the kind of book you want to give to everyone you know because you know it will make their lives a better place. From understanding the importance of completing the stress cycle, to facing down "Human Giver Syndrome" to making friends with the madwoman we all have in our attic, the Nagoski sisters break down some serious research and make it easy to understand and apply. Please do yourself a favor and read this book immediately.
  • I loved the pop culture references, which added a depth and commonality of them. Pop culture is a product of its times, and our times are, as the euphemism goes, "interesting." The use of pop culture to help figure out our responses is a brilliant short cut. BURNOUT taught me so many helpful things, vivid metaphors that should stick in my mind for when the stress is high and my mind is casting about for a place to ground itself. Although many Star Trek references abound, so do others. So very Darmok and Jalad at Tenagra.
  • I learned a lot about myself and my stress, and finally an understandable way to manage it. This book is realistic and relatable and I know I'll read it multiple times.
  • This is an incredible groundbreaking book, for everyone (if the non-women can get past it being written for women). The first two chapters alone are worth the price of the book, just for all the information on how stress and stressors work in our bodies and how to help our bodies heal. Highly recommended.
  • I loved Emily's first book "Come As You Are" and knew that this one would be a home run as well. She and her sister do a fantastic job of making you feel seen while also giving practical solutions. I recommend this to everyone and plan on randomly leaving it in coffee shops so that someone can happen upon it.
  • Excellent, intersectional lens and approach to self-help with relatable anecdotes and science-based tips to improve your life. I love this book and it has improved my life already.
  • Would highly recommend this to anyone who identifies as female, or knows and cares about someone who identifies as female.
  • Burnout by Emily (PhD) & Amelia (DMA) Nagoski is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in late March.

From page 1, this book is immediately directed toward women, which I initially sorta balked at and felt like I was being given a good-intention, high-volume, New Age talking-to. Written by identical twin sisters (who offer frequent pop culture references, real-talk asides, and emphatically describe things to a reader, as if highlighting concepts with wiggly jazz hands), they define burnout as a mix of prolonged emotional labor, caregiver fatigue, and feeling as though your efforts are not noticed or rewarded. They advise their readers to confront and respond to stressors in a full circle, complete-the-process sorta way, finding what works for you and self-care that works, addressing debilitating self-talk, charting the plus and minuses of a decision that needs to be made, being comfortable with who you are and how you look, shrugging off expectation and nearly unreal societal standards, and seeking & maintaining meaningful connections with others - all with a heavy hand in narrative therapy tactics.

The Sorrow Hand A Nick Drake Novel Book 1 Audible Audio Edition Dwight Holing Steve Marvel Tantor Audio Books Reviews

  • The author, Dwight Howling, has written and extremely good mystery, which takes place in a locale that I have some personal experience and was the deciding factor in why I chose to purchase and read this book (normally as the author was someone I had never read before, I would have skipped it as it was not offered as a -Unlimited selection).

That said, I’m certainly glad that purchased it as it was definitely worth it! I did however only award it 4-Stars as there were some “carry-over” editing issues. (5-Stars is reserved for “Overall Perfection”. Granted there were very few, however there were enough to knock off a star.

This is definitely a mystery. It is not filled with action, though there is a great deal of it, and it does not depend upon “action scenes” to carry the storyline, that is carried forward from scene to scene, by an excellent overall plot, great characterization, and a writing style that many other authors may envy.

I liked the protagonist “Nick Drake” and I was able to identify with his “issues” to a great extent though his fight against his addiction to heroin, his own personal “demon”, is not one of them, though the root of its cause…I’ll just say that I too understand “walking with the dead”.

Even though I only gave this 4 Stars I do HIGHLY Recommend it. I will also be looking forward to the second book in the Nick Drake Series. Hopefully it will not be a long wait, but in the mean time I believe I’ll try another of Mr. Holing’s offerings.
  • The descriptions of an area I'm unfamiliar with is what kept me going, in spite of more than a few character tropes and obvious plot manipulations. It's as if the author started with the typical set of cardboard cutouts and then tried to give each one enough detail to lift it above the mold it was taken from. Unfortunately, these superficial trappings could not hide the bones. I did enjoy a few of the traits of the main character and handling of his struggles. I did not enjoy being hit over the head with Vietnam PTSD. These are issues that could be addressed with a bit more subtlety. Also, yes there are a few editing issues not typos but bits and pieces of plot and/or dialogue out of order. In the end, I read the entire book and would probably try another one if the author chooses to continue as a series.
  • This is the second time I have read a novel series where the hero is a wildlife Ranger. The first is of course, the Joe Pickett novels by CJ Box. They are some of my favorite works and I just finished the latest one, and look forward to many more.
So I was a little hesitant, frankly, when I read in the notes for this book that it was about a fish and wildlife character. However, this book is so different in so many ways that I was able to enjoy it for itself, and not compare it to the Pickett books.
.I’m not sure that it is written as smoothly as the Pickett books but then the style of writing, which is choppier and much more direct, fits the character and the setting to a T.
This is not Wyoming, present day, this is Oregon in the late 1960s.
This is not Joe Pickett, slightly world-weary, stridently honest, letter of the law to a fault,. Nick Drake is a Vietnam veteran, struggling with addiction and posttraumatic stress disorder. He admits to being a junkie and relying on it to still the nightmares that still haunt him over his time in country. Being from this generation, and having friends that came back from Vietnam changed in so many ways, the character of Nick Drake is pretty believable. The author weaves the flashbacks of his time in Vietnam quite well with the present day narrative. The characters are well crafted, sympathetic, and more than anything flawed in a real sense.
As the old saying goes, this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship, with sequels a plenty. Hail and farewell, Nick Drake.
  • In this well-crafted story, Nick Drake tries to solve, with the assistance of a crusty, and colorful deputy, Pudge, the disappearance and murder of several young women while Drake fights his own personal demons from a war halfway around the world. In a style that might remind one of James Lee Burke, Dwight Holing weaves a story of intrigue and drama underpinned by Native American mysticism and Drake’s struggle to overcome PTSD. Drake is a very interesting and complex character that drives the story through flashbacks to Vietnam around the time of the Tet Offensive and his current job as a conservation officer. This page-turner will keep you guessing and riveted to the end.

    Jeffrey Miller, Bureau 39
  • Nick Drake is wonderfully complex character and I was invested in this story from the very first page. His backstory in Vietnam is beautifully (and horrifically) described. It was all very visceral and real, layered and emotional. I’m a huge fan of westerns and this felt very much like a
contemporary western married with a mystery. I love the setting and time period. Eastern Oregon in 1968. It was a time of incredible turmoil and change and the story vividly reflects all of it. The dialogue crackles with wit and honesty and the action scenes are beautifully written and really exciting. If you’re looking for a smart, thrilling, beautifully written pager-turner, look no further. I can't wait for book two.
