The Moth Presents Occasional Magic True Stories About Defying the Impossible edition by Catherine Burns Meg Wolitzer Humor Entertainment eBooks Reviews

  • I've been listening to The Moth on NPR for a few years now. (Hey, Moth People, if there's anyone out there reading this I'd love to tell a story on The Moth stage! Call me!) I haven't read the first book yet but immediately ordered this one when it got released. I love that each story is only about seven or eight pages long. I would read a few each night, and it really gave me something to think about. Reading the storyteller's bios at the end was cool too. If you love short stories, or true stories, there's something here for everyone. Very heartfelt, real, and emotional. Thank you, Moth, for an awesome platform! Keep up the good work!
  • I usually stay away from books that say "you'll laugh and you'll cry" but, I have to say, I laughed out loud and I cried like a baby. Really good stories that are short, compelling, and heartfelt. Hate to sound even cornier, but I couldn't put it down. I kept thinking, "I'll just read one more story" and then, before I knew it, I was finished with the book. There isn't one 'bad' story in the book, they are all compassionate and insightful.
  • If you are looking for a window into the positive side of the human spirit this book will lift you up with out being overly sugary, provide humor, and a much needed antidepressant for your blues. Love it and highly recommend for all to enjoy. I've been savoring a story a day so I can dwell on the happy uplift each story provides.
  • Such wide diversity of human experience. Some sad, some funny, some warm and fuzzy. All well told and take you into the narrator's world almost immediately. And because they are short, you can stop and start this book as needed without loss of continuity.
  • I love this book! I am an avid Moth fan, and it's such a treat to be able to read some of the stories I listened to in the past. I highly recommend it.

  • I had never heard of The Moth. What drew me to the book was the title "Occasional Magic True Stories About Defying the Impossible". I thought it was a book about things like an adrenaline-fueled mother lifting a car off of her child. It isn’t. It is so much more.

The Moth is an oral storytelling phenomenon which I encourage you to explore. This book contains a collection of true stories which were told orally at Moth storytelling events by those who lived them. These oral stories were then adapted to the written page. You will notice this distinction almost immediately. The stories read like they were told, not like polished prose.

The effect of this literary device coupled with the stories themselves is almost overwhelming. They are not merely powerful; they are empowering. I found myself glued to each story. My phone pinged; my texts could wait until I finished reading.

I highly recommend this book. It provides an unusual and utterly engrossing reading experience.
  • Oh, how I love The Moth podcast and performances. The Moth is what truly inspires me; human stories and human connection. This book is an absolutely gorgeous and thought-provoking read that will uplift and inspire the reader. I laughed out loud and I also cried along with these stories. If you are new to The Moth and its collection of stories in book form this book would be an excellent place to start.

Occasional Magic is everything I hoped it would be and more. A must read and a must share!

Please note, NetGalley gave me an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
