"When it comes to sleep hits and surprises in the DC New 52, I Vampire is quite possibly ahead of the other 51 titles released at the time. Utterly hard to believe considering it was the one book from the start that was DOA from the moment of its inception. I think everyone really thought this series was for the Twilight fans in the world, which we all probably took bets when the series was going to get cancelled. Oh but we were all wrong, especially after reading I, Vampire Vol. 1: Tainted Love (The New 52). I Vampire is a must read to naysayers of the vampire genre, as well as Scott Snyder's own American Vampire series is proof as well.
But like any great great introduction of a series, you wonder if the momentum can handle it and get past the sophomore slump. You wonder if all of the greatness that volume 1 of I Vampire was but a fluke and the series have no place to go. Well I can tell you right now and I am not ashamed of saying it: volume 2 is just a strong as volume 1 and this series is no guilty pleasure. It is that good and volume 2 further proves this.
[I will point out some spoilers from volume 1 and some from volume 2. So unless you've read volume 1, take caution in the review.]
I, VAMPIRE VOL.2: RISE OF THE VAMPIRES collects issues #7-12 and JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #7 and #8 and is dividing into two stories. Both Justice League issues and I Vampire issues 7-8 deal with the "Rise of the Vampires" story, while issues 9-12 deal with war against the Van Helsings.
Picking up from the cliff hanger ending of last volume 1, Andrew Bennett is dead and so rises the original vampire himself, Cain. Justice League Dark joins the fight for Gotham as the city is overrun with vampires as Cain takes over Mary, Queen of Blood, army away from her. As the Justice League Dark, Batman, and other human helpers are down and out from the might of Cain, the only way to stop the madness from spreading: bring back Andrew Bennett.
Writer Joshua Hale Failkov wrote volume 1 with a great dichotomy for Andrew and Mary's conflicting ideals of the vampire way, but volume 2 has it where Failkov furthers the stakes (no pun intended) even higher this go around then volume 1 by making it an all out war. The scale for the fight for Gotham with the JL Dark and Batman family holding out for the return of Bennett is ambitious, while the ramifications of what happens when one person gains too much power for their own good is all epic.
The key thing that makes I Vampire great is defying reader expectations and volume 2 delivers. With the loss of power from Mary, a character we wanted to see bite the big one from volume 1, you now sort of sympathize with her now since losing power to Cain. Tig, which finally got her revenge, see's the foolishness her vengeance got her. And yes, although this might sound like spoiler, but: Andrew does come back. Thankfully the return is handled well and in an utterly cool god like way, which leads to another dilemma for the character readers won't expect: what happens when one gains the powers of a god? It's a question you'll have to read for yourself. The return of a messiah-vampire leads to the attack of the ancient feud with the Van Helsings that even furthers the epic scale of battle and, yes, another old school Universal monster joins the fry with vampires and werewolves. Which, just like volume 1 ended, ends on another status quo ending that begs for more in volume 3.
Yes, Failkov makes one hell of a great bloody horror, action, suspenseful, witty, and status quo turning event after another book which makes I Vampire a book you just can't put down. Even the inclusion of Peter Milligan's Justice League Dark is well done to add to the event , as well as the inclusion of Stormwatch in issue 12 is truly humorous and gels well with what is going on this series. Failkov can do no wrong.
Special mention has to go to artist Andrea Serrentino for his noir-like art style makes up a good deal of what makes I Vampire a must read. His art matches the horror and bleakness of the world drawn, but even more so that the other half of the book takes place in broad daylight, Serrentino still draws an excellent book. Splash pages could make up a multimillion dollar set in an actual film, with armies of vampires fighting it out for Gotham, an fight of pure power from Andrew and Cain, to a dessert full of vampires and mummies killing each other with numerous planes crashing in the background. Serrentino keeps all of the ingredients for a horror and action book without breaking a sweat.
The only two problems are the same with volume 1. Some of Serrentino's art is so bleak that you can't tell certain characters alike from another. And the graphic violence is just as high (if not more so) then volume 1. Failkov/Serrentino's I Vampire is graphic for a reason, so again, if high violence isn't your thing, you might not like this.
Either way, I, VAMPIRE VOL.2: RISE OF THE VAMPIRES continues to surprise and awe me. The book has action, blood, romance, deep characters, humor, and some of the best reader defying moments in current comics and just continues to show that this series is still well worth your time and attention, even if the series is cancelled after issue #19 and mostly will end with I, Vampire Vol. 3: Wave of Mutilation (The New 52). I strongly suggest picking up volume 1 first if you haven't already and seeing yourself that this series is worth reading and possibly saving one day. And for anyone who read volume 1 and loved it...what are you waiting for? Pick up this phenomenal book now."

I Vampire Vol 2 Rise of the Vampires The New 52 Joshua Hale Fialkov Andrea Sorrentino 9781401237837 Books Reviews
- If you read the first volume then you know how good this series can be and the second book continues the great story and art. There are even some cross over superheroes in this book and the next, I won't ruin it by giving the identities away, which adds to the overall book. If you enjoyed the first book I would definitely recommend that you buy this one as its a great read. The story is nothing like the typical vampire one out there but is instead dark and interesting with the art to match the tone perfectly. As far as the new 52 goes these books are in my top ten of those, hope you enjoy the books as much as I did.
- I, Vampire Vol. 1 Tainted Love (The New 52) is really, really good. The series is ending with issue 19 in April, and my feelings couldn't be anymore hurt. A big reason this excellent series was overlooked for so long is because Jenny Frison the cover artist for the first part of the series, did a terrible, terrible job. I'm sure she is a wonderful person, but click the link in the beginning of this review and see what she did. Are you back? It's awful, right? Now, I'm not saying it is badly drawn, but the style in no way represents the series inside that awful cover. I Vampire is bloody, violent, character driven, well written joy, and Ms. Frison's covers did nothing to convey that.
The sheer level of power on display in this volume is staggering for anything outside of an Akira Toriyama story, but it is handled flawlessly. Vol 2 actually weaves Issues 7 & 8 of the also excellent Justice League Dark Vol. 2 The Books of Magic (The New 52), which proves two things 1. Dc's really ramped up the magical side of their continuity to great effect and 2. Nobody noticed, which is actively breaking my heart. In this volume Batman, Batgirl, Justice League Dark, and Stormwatch Vol. 1 The Dark Side (The New 52) all make appearances, and it never comes off as forced or contrived. if anything it elevates this series, while making the reader want to see the other series as well.
The character work from the first book continues here, and I have to give Joshua Hale Fialkov all the credit in the world, because he has written some of the most engaging, fascinating, likeable characters in comics right now. They feel organic. The dialogue is witty, the banter funny, and the pacing is comfortably quick. Andrea Sorrentino is absolutely killing it on the artwork side, making this one of the most beautiful comics on the stands today.
The story centers around Andrew Bennett and his position in the vampire hierarchy. I won't say anymore because it really is a treat to see the story unfold, and I won't deny you the satisfaction finishing this volume provided me. All in all, I Vampire vol 2 continues the excellent work vol 1 started. The story is fantastic, the characters are deep and engaging, the art is beautiful, and you get a lot of story for your buck. If you like vampires, you'll love this. If you like comics you'll love this. An incredible read and a definite buy. - When it comes to sleep hits and surprises in the DC New 52, I Vampire is quite possibly ahead of the other 51 titles released at the time.
